SufalNet4EU is a network of local and regional governments cooperating on an EU-funded project to both stimulate creative redevelopment, and reduce the environmental risks, of closed and abandoned landfills throughout Europe.
There are over 150,000 landfills in Europe, covering the same area as the cities of Rome, Paris and Madrid, combined. The challenges posed by such a gigantic amount of waste are enormous, but at the same time practical, achievable solutions are well within reach.
The main objective of the SufalNet4EU Project is to have its 15 partners from 10 countries plan the redevelopment of one or more closed landfill sites, in order to deliver action plans by the end of 2011. These plans will describe the environmental, social, and economic benefits of their particular landfill re-use propositions. Redevelopment include such items as: residential, industrial and commercial sectors, parks and recreation areas, and zones devoted to forestry, ecology and farming.
An additional goal of SufalNet4EU is to share information wherever possible. Landfill redevelopment is a concern for many different stakeholders - from communities, land owners and municipalities - to project developers, government officials and politicians.
