PHASE 1; Identification and selection of landfillsites to be redeveloped
In the Province of Noord-Brabant 9 sites are identified and selected to be redeveloped in the the framework of SufalNet4EU. Each landfillsite is situated in a different municipality. The municipalities are the prime stakeholders in the action planning process for Noord-Brabant. The sites differ in geographical setting, planning phase and objectives. Please find a short description of each site.
Bergse Haven, Municipality of Bergen op Zoom
The Bergse Harbour of Bergen op Zoom is a large industrial and housing area of 91 hectares of which 50% is estimated to be contaminated. It is situated along the Eastern Scheldt which is a former estuary of the North Sea. When the fortified walls of the city were no longer needed, they were broken down. The canals used as the sewer system of the inner city were dumped with mainly broken pots of the local pottery industry and household waste. Bergen op Zoom would like to clean up the area, to re-open the canals and to redevelop new residential areas.
Sustainable Industrial area Cranendonck (DIC), Municipality of Cranendonck
A zinc factory (Nyrstar) is located in the village Budel-Dorplein. To increase employment and to position the area as a centre of metallurgic production an industrial area of 180 hectares is planned. Within this area a closed landfill of 11 hectares is situated. Because the area has high natural and cultural values the industry will be integrated into the landscape and surrounding forestry.
Padbroek, Municipality of Cuijk
The closed landfill Padbroek is about 1 hectare and is located in the middle of a residential area built in the 1970s. It is currently used as a children's playground. Cuijk would like to regenerate the area and would like to improve the social cohesion by planning a community centre, childcare centre and a school. The location of the closed landfill is considered to be the best place to plan a new school.
Bakkersdam, Municipality of Heusden
Bakkersdam is situated at the slope of the dike along the river Meuse, just outside the historic fortified town of Heusden. The closed landfill is about 2.7 hectares and is currently not in use. Heusden would like to restore the cultural heritage by integrating and connecting new areas into the landscape associated with the historic town.
Moerenburg, Municipality of Tilburg
In the agricultural green area surrounding Tilburg, which is the second largest city in Noord-Brabant, a new natural and recreational area is developed. This area was formerly marshland and was filled with soil including waste materials. Two closed landfill sites are located here. One of the landfills is next to a small creek 'Voortse Stroom'. Tilburg would like to have the creek returned to its meandering form and to have the waste materials removed from the streambanks.
Vlagheide, Municipality of Schijndel
Vlagheide together with Gulbergen is one of the environmentally controlled landfills in Noord-Brabant. It was in operation till 2003. The landfill itself is a 12 to 18 metres high hill in a surrounding area of 1000 hectares. At the moment a test of sustainable landfilling is running and the landfill is partly covered with a mineral topliner. A masterplan has been developed by the three nearby municipalities of Schijndel, Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode. They would like to transform the area into a recreational area with golf course, camp sites, chalets and a tearoom. Local initiatives are encouraged to have the masterplan implemented.
Gulbergen, Association of Municipalities in the Region Eindhoven
Gulbergen is also one the environmentally controlled landfills in Noord-Brabant. It is about 50 hectares. Its height is 41 metres above the surrounding area. The landfill has been closed in 2004. On and around the landfill a new estate of 325 hectares is being developed. The municipalities working together in the Region of Eindhoven would like to create a green and recreational buffer between the cities of Helmond and Eindhoven. A golf course has already been installed against the slopes of the landfill. Also a zoo and a garden centre (Intratuin) are located here. The Region of Eindhoven would like to earmark the estate as a Brainport showcase area.
De Kater, Municipality of Boxmeer
Boxmeer is located next to the river Meuse. A small landfill of about 2 hectares is situated in the floodplain along the river dike. It was used to dump household, industrial and demolition waste. Boxmeer would like to remove the landfill in order to use the area for waterretention and to restore the typical hedges in the floodplain. The costs should be financed by floating waterhouses in a nearby branch of the river.
De Vlaas, Municipality of Deurne
The landfill De Vlaas is an old clay pit which has been filled up with household, industrial and demolition waste. It is currently being used for agriculture. The area of about 2 hectares will be transformed into a residential area. Deurne would like to remove the landfill and to connect a nearby watercreek to a new watersystem within the area.
