PHASE 1 Identification and selection of landfillsites to be redeveloped
The County of Böblingen covers an area of about 600 square kilometres in the middle of Baden-Wurttemberg in the Stuttgart region. The county's waste department is a publicly owned waste disposal and uitilisation facility serving 373.000 residents in 26 towns and communities. It owns 4 closed landfills that are closed in the 1990's. All 4 sites are located in a forested area and will be returned to forestry after a period of aftercare. The County of Böblingen would like to use these sites during their aftercare period.
Landfill Böblingen
This landfill is about 20 hectares and contains a total volume of 5.2 million cubic metres of household and industrial waste. It was closed in 1994. Currently the site is sealed with a mineral topliner. Landfil gas is extracted to produce electricity for the regional grid. The County of Böblingen would like to use the area as a park for producing energy by sun-, wind- and biomass power.
Landfill Leonberg
This landfill is about 23 hectares. A total volume of 5.4 million cubic metres of household and industrial waste has been dumped here. It was closed in 1999. The surface has not yet been sealed. It is planned for 2015. Today the area is used as an open composting site for tree and hedge cuttings. The edges of the site are turnaround places to recycle waste materials. Also landfill gas is extracted. Electricity is supplied to the regional grid. The County of Böblingen also would like to use this site for producing alternative energy by sun-, wind- and biomass power.
Landfill Sindelfingen
This landfill is about 27 hectares and contains a total volume of 5.9 million cubic metres of household and industrial waste. It was closed in 1997. The sealing of the surface is planned for 2011. Currently the site is used as a paper sorting plant. At the roof of the plant a photo voltaic system is installed. Also electricity is produced of the extracted landfill gas. The older part of landfill (about 13 hectares) has been recultivated. The County of Böblingen would like to use this site for producing alternative energy by sun-, wind- and biomass power and recycling plant.
Landfill Autobahn/Rennstrecke
This landfill is about 25 hectares and has a total volume of 7.3 million cubic metres of mineral waste. Presently, at the top of the landfill, there is a fermentation plant for biodegradeble waste. The biogas produces electricity and is inserted into the regional grid. The heat is also used to dry the fermentation residues. Most part of the landfill has been recultivated. The County of Böblingen also would like to use this site for producing alternative energy by sun-, wind- and biomass power and recycling plant
Why were these landfills identified and selected ?
These landfills were selected because of their location in the middle of recreational and forested area, their potential to contaminate the ground- and surface water and to improve the ecological system and landscape. Furtermore the interim use will have a positive impact on the general public.
The County of Böblingen would like to plan the photo voltaics, the wind turbines and the forest reclamation together with representatives of the relevant public authorities, conservation groups and community groups.
