PHASE 1 Identification and selection of landfillsites to be redeveloped

The County of Ludwigsburg is also part of Baden-Wurttemberg in the Stuttgart region. The publicly owned company services over 500.000 residents in the county. For that purpose the company operates 3 landfills (Am Froschgraben, Am Lemberg and Burghof) and a series of collection stations. The company also services the mineral waste disposal from Stuttgart city and all five surrounding counties.

Ludwigsburg concluded that the landfill Am Lemberg has already been recultivated with forest according to the German Forest Law. Landfill Burghof will be still in operation for the next 20 years.

Ludwigsburg would like to develop a rotational plantation and biomass production on the landfill Am Froschgraben during extension of the landfillcapacity.

Landfill Am Froschgraben

This landfill is located in the agricultural area of the county. It is about 42 hectares and a volume of 3.5 million cubic metres has been deposited. Ludwigsburg would like to extend the landfillcapacity for the disposal of mineral waste. The landfill offers the opportunity for a heightening and for more capacity. At present the shape of Am Froschgraben is in a new planning proces to enlarge the capacity for another 2 million cubic metres. In this planning process Ludwigsburg has to present a new recultivation plan. In the meantime Ludwigsburg would like to plan a short rotational plantation on the site and to consult all stakeholders. Ludwigsburg has already approved to operate a small test area of 2 hectares. After closure Ludwigsburg would like to extend the biomass plantation to 25 hectares.

Ludwigsburg has evaluated their decision to develop a short rotational plantation on the site in terms of environmental, social and economical criteria. This has resulted in a positive conclusion.

The community of Schwieberdingen will be informed about the temporary planning results about the new topography of the site and will be involved. As the total area of the site covers 42 hectares there is sufficient space to develop parallel uses such as barbecue sites, play grounds and mountainbike course.
