PHASE 1 Identification and selection of the Tuskesret landfill in Pecs
Hungary has 12 special agencies for regional administration. These agencies or directorates are directed by the central government to perform specific tasks. The Directorate of the south-transdanubian region has 178 employees and manages the area of three counties Somogy, Batanya and Tolna with a population of 730.000 inhabitants.
Main tasks of the Directorate are to maintain the rivers, to protect the area from flooding, to manage public water - and waste water utilities. Furthermore the Directorate coordinates the Regional Waste Management Plan. The Directorate also investigates operational landfills and carries out programmes for modernisation, closure and redevelopment. Objective of this Regional Waste Management Plan is to eliminate and re-cultivate uncontrolled dumps and landfills. This plan has to be revised every two years.
The re-cultivation of the Tuskesret landfill in Pecs
This landfill is located in the heart of the city. A volume of 30 million tons of slurry has been dumped here. The landfill is about 51 hectares of uncovered slurry within a huge greenery area of 300 hectares. Next to the landfill is a lake. A Master Plan for recultivation into an recreational and natural area is incorporated in the Development Plan of the Municipality of Pecs.
