Action Planning in Campania Region, Italy

Campania Region is located in the south of Italy. It has a population of more than 5 million inhabitants. The economy is based on agriculture, industry and tourism. Campania has 5 provinces; Caserta, Benevento, Avellino, Napoli and Salerno.

Salerno Province in cooperation with the association of munipalities for waste management in Salerno (Consorzio Salerno 1) will be involved in SufalNet4EU. Together with the Department for interregional cooperation and EU Structural Funds of Campania Region there is a strong partnership to have one closed landfills actualy redeveloped.

The Canetiello landfill located in Cava de Tirrenni has been selected to be redeveloped in SufalNet4EU.

The landfill is located on the western slopes of the mountains of Salerno at a height of 700 metres above sea level. Waste has been dumped on a series of terraces with a slope of about 25 to 30 %. It was in operation between 1982 and 1992. Mainly solid urban waste in a volume of 350.000 cubic metres was deposited here. Environmental risks are percieved as low. A drainage system is already installed and the waste has been covered with soil.

The area where the landfill is located is now classified as partly agricultural and partly as a forest. The area will be restored in agro-forestry. Moreover, the presence of the landfill is a real wound to the local landscape, thanks to the reuse project of the site this wound will be healed. The restoration should therefore be an element of mending the landscape; have an innovative approach and must respond to objective requirements.

The idea of creating a centre for sports and open space is consistent both with respect to the environment and the social context. In fact, for many years the local population calls for the safety of the landfill. In addition, the town of Cava de’ Tirreni, because of its shape, is poor in suitable areas for services and leisure spaces for citizens.

A technical working group is installed and a project proposal will be presented to the politicians. All relevant stakeholders will be consulted in the planning process.
