About Sufalnet4eu

Funded by INTERREG IVC, the organization that helps European regions form partnerships to work together on common projects, SufalNet4EU carries on the work completed by its predecessor - SufalNet - in the Model Strategy. Please find SufalNet's Model Strategy above.

SufalNet4EU is operational during 2010 and 2011 as a network of 15 local and regional government partners in 10 different countries. Because the project has been extended SufalNet4Eu will close on 31 March 2012.

The Province of Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands, is leading partner.

Common approach in action planning

Working together, the SufalNet4EU partners have exchanged ideas, problems and solutions, and supported each other in creating their individual Action Plans and redeveloping their landfill sites. A common approach of 6 phases has been been followed, each adding a 'chapter' to the action plan. 

These phases are:

  • Identification and selection of landfillsite(s), and stakeholder analysis
  • Land use planning
  • Environmental planning
  • Legal, social and financial implications
  • Draft Action Plan, including project despcriptions and draft application forms for EU Structural Funds programmes
  • and Final Action Plans.

Towards achieving 15 Action Plans, partners have worked in 3 thematic Workin Groups focussing on: 

Redevelopment on a regional scale:

  • Campania Region (Italy)
  • South Transdanubian Environment and water Directorate (Hungary)
  • Marshall office of the Wielkopolska Region (Poland)
  • Extremadura Region (Spain)
  • Province of Noord-Brabant (Netherlands)

Redevelopment of Nature&landscape:

  • Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council (United Kingdom)
  • Municiplality of Lavrion (Greece)
  • County of Boblingen (Germany)
  • Sicily Region (Italy)
  • City of Kosice (Slovakia)

Redevelopment of Economic functions:

  • NV Afvalzorg (Netherlands)
  • Bistrita City Hall (Romania)
  • Belfast City Council (United Kingdom)
  • Malaga Provincial Council (Spain)
  • County of Ludwigsburg (Germany)

At the Launch Conference of SufalNet4EU on 27&28 April 2010 in 's-Hertogenbosch, (Netherlands) all partners presented their first paper in their Working Group. It has resulted in identifying and selecting of 36 landfill sites and more than 500 hectares to be redeveloped. 

In September and October 2010 3 Working Group meetings, focussing on land use planning, were held:

  • Working Group for Economic functions met on 15&16 September 2010 in Ludwigsburg, (Germany);
  • Working Group for Nature&landscape met on 21&22 September 2010 in Kosice, (Slovakia)
  • Working Group for Regional scale met on 5&6 October 2010 in Poznan (Poland).

On 8 & 9 December 2010 all partners met in Lavrio, Greece for presenting and discussing the third phase on environmental issues and technical aspects of the landfillredevelopment.

In March and April 2011 another round of 3 Working Group meetings were held focussing on the implementation aspects such as public engagement, financing and legal aspects.

  • Working Group for Economic Functions met on 15&16 March 2011 in Bistrita (Romania);
  • Working Group for Nature&Landscape met on 23&24 March 2011 in Palermo/Agrigento (Italy)
  • Working Group for Regional scale met on 7&8 April 2011 in Caceres (Spain)  

On 15&16 June 2011 a plenary Coordination Conference was held in Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK). All partners presented their first Draft Action Plan and showed their landfill sites at posters. Key note speakers lectured on European funding, European Investment Bank and private investments. In September and October 2011 the second draft Action Plans were presented and discussed in an additional round of 3 Working Group meetings. All critical issues in the Action Plans were exchanged and discussed too. 

  • Working Group for Regional scale met on 14&15 September 2011 in Pécs,(Hungary);
  • Working Group for Nature&Landscape met on 26&27 September 2011 in Böblingen(Germany);
  • Working Group for Economic functions met on 5&6 October 2011 in Málaga (Spain). 

Finally all Action Plans were delivered by the project partners on 16&17 November 2011 during the final conference in Cava dei Tirreni (Italy). Politicians signed a 'political statement' for having the redevelopment projects actually implemented with European co-financing. All projects were presented and scenario's for European co-fnancing were discussed.

Furthermore SufalNet's future was presented and discussed.....
