The Regional Department of Water and Waste of Regional Council of Energy and Public Utility Services - Region of Sicily has identified the landfill site "Consolida" as appropriate for redevelopment.
Consilida landfill in Agrigento (8 hectares)
The identified site is located inside the industrial zone of Agrigento to 270 meters above sea level. It is located about 6 km from the city, 2 km from the nature reserve "Maccalube Park, 8 km from the UNESCO" Valley of the Temples "and 1 km from the 'Hospital of St. John."
The Consolida landfill was in operation from 1980 until 1999.. Some 1.6 million cubic meters till an average height of 14 meters have been deposited. The area of Consolida Landfill was landfilled on a temporary and urgent way by the Agrigento municipality. It is still privately owned.
After its closure, the landfill have been carried out activities necessary to protect the environment such as collection and disposal of leachate, fence control, the arrangement of the internal small streets and the set up the wells for the collection of leachate The leachate extracted and disposed of amounted to about 56,000 l / year (average constant). Due to huge rainfall some landslides along the west side have occurred. These landslides have moved parts of the waste and have caused flooding of the collected leachate.
In order to recover the environmental and social value of the site the Agrigento Municipality would like to remediate and to have the Consolida waste disposal site transformed into a green wooded area, a pet recovery centre and a park for renewable energies. This pet recovery centre is to fullfil the need for temporary shelter for abandoned or lost animals. It should accommodate and treat up to 300 animals.
