PHASE 1 Identification and selection of the Consolida landfill in Agrigento
The Consolida waste disposal site is located near the industrial zone of Agrigento along a slope at about 270 meter above sea level. It is situated about 6 km from the town, 2 km from the wildlife reserve 'Parco delle Maccalube, 8 km from the UNESCO site 'Temples Valley' and about 1 km from the 'S. Giovanni hospital'. The site was in operation from the 1980's till 1999. It is about 8 hectares and the height of the waste is 14 metres.
Today, since closure in 1999, some aftercare measures have been installed such as leachate collection and treatment, fence control and a road network. Due to huge rainfall some landslides along the west side have occurred. These landslides have moved parts of the waste and have caused flooding of the collected leachate.
In order to recover the environmnetal and social value of the site the Agrigento Municipality would like to remediate and to the Conolida waste disposal site transformed into a green wooded area, a pet recovery centre and a park for renewable energies.
Stakeholders are the Province and Municipality of Agrigento, Sicily Region, University of Palermo, Waste Management and Industry.
