PHASE 1 Identification ans selection of landfill sites to be redeveloped

Wielkopolska is the second largest region of Poland. The Marshal Office is responsible for all waste management planning in the region, amongst other responsibilities. In the past, most local communities were operating their own small and medium size landfills, resulting in various problems. Wielkopolska carries out the current Waste Management Plan for Wielkopolska Region for the years 2008 – 2011 by closing landfills not fulfilling minimum environmental requirements.

A few of the recently closed, and poorly rehabilitated old landfills have been chosen for further and more comprehensive plans of protection and development. Wielkopolska has carried out a risk assessment using SufalNet's Model Strategy on examining environmental risks of the sites:

  • Landfill Anielin, Okonek community, 3.6 ha area, in operation since 1988,
  • Landfill Granowo, Granowo community, 6 ha area, in operation since 1975,
  • Landfill Bagdad, Wyrzysk community, 1.1 ha area, in operation since 1997,
  • Landfill Krajenka, Krajenka community, 3.3 ha area, in operation since 1972,
  • Landfill Bonikowo, Kościan community, 2 ha area, in operation since 1991,
  • Landfill Łubnica, Wielichowo community, 2 ha area, in operation since 1983,
  • Landfill Zapust, Ostroróg community, 3 ha area, in operation since 1988,
  • Landfill Rumianek, Tarnowo Podgórne community, 2 ha, in operation since 1988.

Wielkopolka would like to have the environmental risks proper analysed and to have the best practice redevelopment models applied to each of the sites. In the initial phase different redevelopment options of the closed landfills will be considered e.g. for environmental or recreational purposes. Ideally, the model options that will be developed during Sufalnet4EU will also be applicable for local communities in other sites in the region, and in the country.
